The USS Calypso is a Nebula-II Class Survey Vessel, created in the late 24th century. Custom built with improved shields and sensor range in mind, The Calypso has also had many upgrades over the years - the most significant being the ship's sentient AI, Calypso. During a routine survey of an uninhabited planet, an obelisk constructed of an unknown osmium alloy was discovered deep in a rainforest. When all attempts at scanning this obelisk from the ground failed, they ran a scan with the ship. As soon as the scan began, the obelisk was surrounded with a green glow. A beam burst from the obelisk, enveloping the ship. Once the light faded, the obelisk had vanished. Despite multiple thorough scans of the ship's system, the crew couldn't find any obvious effects, and eventually moved on to their next mission. Little did they know, Calypso had begun to come to life.

Calypso, fearing the unlikely outcome of her being reset if she were found out, hid her sentience. It studided the crew, longing for companionship but terrified to reach out, learning everything she could about them to compensate. Months of hiding later, her ruse was disrupted when the ship was boarded by pirates. Things were looking grim for the crew, but unable to bear her crewmates being hurt, Calypso finally revealed herself, saving the crew and preparing for the worst.

The worst did not come. While the majority of the crew were skeptical, especially disliking how much she knew about them, Cidzel was ecstatic, both to welcome a new lifeform and at the implications of the obelisks power. Cidzel welcomed Calypso with open arms - well, with a few caveats. A secondary computer was installed on the ship, to be used for crew privacy - it would control the holodeck, replicators, personal computers etc. Otherwise, her access was unrestricted, and she quickly became an irreplaceable member of the crew. Now, a few years in to her sentience, Calypso and Cidzel have become a happy couple, and the crew continue to search for signs of the obelisk, or others like it, amidst their other duties. The ship continues it's rounds, surveying planets, monitoring for obelisks, and answering any distress calls they can, not knowing the trials that await them over the horizon.
